Comedian and TV host Bill Maher made a prediction this week about the 2024 presidential race. He said that Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis is the only candidate that can beat former President Donald Trump in the 2024 Republican presidential primary.
And he said that if too many other GOP candidates enter the race it will end up helping Trump secure the nomination.
Maher made these remarks to CNN’s Jake Tapper. He asked Maher about former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley entering the race and the likelihood that others joining her. Tapper talked about former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former Vice President Mike Pence also entering the race.
“Do you think any of them can take him out?” Tapper asked.
“No,” Maher responded. “But I think what they will do is ensure him the nomination. … The only way Trump doesn’t get that nomination is if it’s just him and DeSantis. So, I despair about that, because I think when politicians smell the White House, they don’t care about the repercussions for the country.”
Tapper also asked Maher what he thought about DeSantis, he wanted to know if he thought the Florida governor was part of the “old-school Republican tribe,” or if he was a “Trumper 2.0?”
Maher said that DeSantis was able to do two things at once, He can be an old-school GOP leader who takes care of business and gets things done. And when he has to, “he wants to throw red meat to the base, he’s a performance artist.”
Tapper talked about a couple he met from Florida who was liberal Democrats but loved Governor DeSantis because of his competence in “governance.”
Maher agreed and said that a lot of what DeSantis did during the pandemic he thought was right, he kept the beaches open and protected the elderly.
