President Joe Biden invited another non-binary to the White House, this time a drag queen. The drag queen, who uses they/them as a pronoun, advocates “for children.”
Both the president and the First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden, welcomed Marti G. Cummings to attend Tuesday’s signing ceremony for the Respect for Marriage Act.
Cummings thanked Biden across social media platforms for the warm reception, and she posted a picture of the invitation they/them received “requesting the pleasure of your company.”
Cummings is a Drag Queen Story Hour performer, she once performed in full drag dancing in a revealing outfit and singing “Baby Shark” on a bar counter. She was singing the song to a small toddler. Cummings shared a video of this encounter in March 2019 and it went viral.
“When a 2 year old comes to brunch you perform baby shark for them!!!” Cummings wrote.
The 20-second video began with Cummings legs stuffed inside leather thigh-high black boots. They were spread out in the toddler’s direction and then they/them sat crossed-legged facing the seated child.
Cummings told NBC News that the little boy partook in “drag roulette.” And they/them tweeted, “Anyone who thinks drag isn’t for children is wrong. Drag is expression, and children are such judgment-free beings; they don’t really care what you’re wearing, just what you’re performing.”
After some of the comments were not positive, Cummings began a rant saying that children don’t care if a man is dressed in women’s clothes, he said it is “the same when I do Drag Queen Story Hour.” Children “don’t care that I am a gay man in a dress; they care about the story I am reading,” Cummings claimed. “It would be nice if us adults could let the child inside of us out for a little bit, so maybe we could all be a little more accepting of others ourselves.”
He has also said that Drag is “a leadership role model for everyone, kids, too.” And he continues to headline a Drag Queen Story Hour that features toddlers. He said that this was a way to “spread joy, teach acceptance & love.”
In one of those Story Hours, Cummings celebrated when a young boy watching him parade around with plus-sized drag queens said that he wanted to perform with them next year.
Cummings isn’t always focused on kids, he is a fixture in New York City’s gay nightlife as the founding president of the Hell’s Kitchen Democrats and a one-time advisor on the Mayor’s Nightlife Advisory Council.
Several years ago, Cummings guest starred in a three-and-a-half-minute music video for the expletive-filled song entitled, “Show Me Your D*ck.”
Last year, he ran for a seat on the New York City Council but lost in the primary. He wrote on his website that Drag and Politics go hand in hand. While running, he promised to no longer perform in drag if he was elected.
“Will I be sad not being in a nightclub every day? Yeah. But I also know that me making laws to protect people is what my drag has called me to do,” said Cummings.
His platform included defunding the police, “I’m a proud fem queer nonbinary drag artist who wants to defund police…we are going to fight for you the people not police unions, not real estate, but for you,” Cummings tweeted in June 2020.
Later he tweeted, “F*ck the police.” He said that he wouldn’t settle for anything less than defunding them. He also wanted to abolish ICE. And he supported an ACAB cafe that would not serve police officers. ACAB is an acronym that stands for “All Cops Are Bastards.”
Thanks, Joe and Jill, your friends are amazing.
