The NRA put California Gov. Gavin Newsom on notice that a lawsuit is coming.
The lawsuit concerns AB 1127, the bill Newsom signed to enact a ban on new sales of Glock handguns. The Democrat governor approved this radical gun control measure.
AB 1127 is known as the Glock ban bill. It takes effect on July 1, 2026.
Breitbart News reported that the Glock ban bill accomplishes its prohibition by labeling Glocks a machinegun-convertible pistol. This creative definition sets the stage for the ban.
The bill contains specific language that expands gun restrictions. It says the following about machinegun-convertible pistols.
“This bill would expand the above definition of ‘machinegun’ to include any machinegun-convertible pistol equipped with a pistol converter and, thus, prohibit the manufacture, sale, possession, or transportation of a machinegun-convertible pistol equipped with a pistol converter.”
The NRA pounced on the new ban immediately. NRA-ILA executive director John Commerford issued a strong statement about Newsom’s actions.
“Gavin Newsom and his gang of progressive politicians in California are continuing their crusade against constitutional rights.”
“Once again, they are attempting to violate landmark Supreme Court decisions and disarm law-abiding citizens by banning some of the most commonly owned handguns in America.”
“This flagrant violation of rights cannot, and will not, go unchecked.”
Newsom’s Glock ban represents another attack on Second Amendment rights in California. The state already has some of the strictest gun laws in America. But Newsom continues pushing for more restrictions.
Glocks are among the most popular handguns in the United States. Millions of Americans own Glocks for self-defense, sport shooting, and law enforcement use. Police departments across the country use Glock handguns.
The guns are reliable, accurate, and easy to use. They are the choice of countless law-abiding citizens who want to protect themselves and their families.
But Newsom wants to ban them in California. He signed a bill that will make it illegal to sell new Glock handguns in the state. This affects gun stores, shooting ranges, and millions of California residents.
The bill uses deceptive language to accomplish the ban. It labels Glocks as machinegun-convertible pistols. This is a made-up category designed to ban popular handguns.
A Glock is not a machine gun. It fires one bullet per trigger pull just like any other handgun. But California Democrats are pretending Glocks can easily be converted to machine guns.
This is false and misleading. Converting any firearm to full auto is already illegal under federal law. It requires technical knowledge and special parts. Law-abiding gun owners don’t do this.
But Newsom is using this false premise to ban Glocks. He’s attacking the Second Amendment rights of millions of Californians. He’s disarming law-abiding citizens while criminals ignore gun laws.
John Commerford is right that this violates landmark Supreme Court decisions. The Supreme Court has ruled that Americans have a constitutional right to keep and bear arms. This includes popular handguns like Glocks.
The Court specifically said that commonly owned firearms for lawful purposes are protected by the Second Amendment. Glocks clearly meet this standard. They are extremely common and used for lawful purposes.
Newsom’s ban directly violates this constitutional protection. He is attempting to prohibit the sale of commonly owned handguns. This is exactly what the Supreme Court said states cannot do.
The NRA is preparing to sue California over this unconstitutional law. The lawsuit will challenge the ban as a violation of the Second Amendment. Second Amendment groups have a strong legal case.
California has lost many gun control lawsuits in recent years. Federal courts have struck down multiple California gun laws as unconstitutional. The Glock ban will likely meet the same fate.
But Newsom doesn’t care about the Constitution or court rulings. He continues pushing extreme gun control despite losing in court. He wastes taxpayer money defending unconstitutional laws.
This is part of his broader crusade against gun rights. Newsom wants to disarm law-abiding Californians. He believes citizens shouldn’t have the right to own effective firearms for self-defense.
The Glock ban takes effect next July unless courts block it. Gun rights groups will file lawsuits to stop the ban before it takes effect. They will ask courts for an injunction.
California gun owners face increasing restrictions on their Second Amendment rights. Newsom and progressive politicians continue attacking gun ownership at every opportunity. They pass new gun control laws every year.
But the NRA and other gun rights groups fight back. They file lawsuits to protect constitutional rights. They win many of these cases in court.
The Glock ban will be another legal battle. But gun rights advocates are confident they will prevail. The law clearly violates the Second Amendment.
