California Governor Gavin Newsom had a public meltdown this week after the Trump administration cut off federal funding to Planned Parenthood affiliates in his state, calling the move “just plain cruel.” But to many Americans, it looks more like a long-overdue end to taxpayer-funded abortion and radical left-wing activism disguised as “health care.”
The Trump administration’s move came after nine California Planned Parenthood affiliates were found to be in potential violation of multiple executive orders, including bans on funding elective abortions, promoting DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) policies with taxpayer dollars, and allegedly providing abortion services to illegal immigrants.
In response, the Department of Health and Human Services froze all Title X funding to these affiliates, fulfilling Trump’s January pledge to ensure no federal money supports the abortion industry. The freeze, according to the White House, is temporary while investigations are underway — but the political impact has already lit up the left.
Newsom took to social media in a panic: “Woke up this morning to the Trump Administration freezing ALL of CA’s Title X funding,” he wrote. “This is just plain cruel.” He pointed out that Title X was created under President Nixon and insisted it funds “basic reproductive care” like birth control and STD testing — ignoring the obvious elephant in the room: abortion.
Planned Parenthood is, by its own admission, the largest abortion provider in the U.S. But it continues to hide behind the veil of “health services” whenever funding is threatened. In this case, Planned Parenthood Action Fund President Alexis McGill went into full alarmism mode, accusing Trump and Elon Musk of pushing a “dangerous political agenda” that would lead to worsening cancer outcomes and rising STI rates.
But the truth is simpler: Trump is keeping a campaign promise to disentangle taxpayer money from abortion providers and to defund leftist institutions that use government dollars to push progressive ideology. And if that affects Planned Parenthood’s bottom line, maybe they shouldn’t have violated federal orders to begin with.
More importantly, many conservatives view this as a moral victory. Trump’s order reflects the view of tens of millions of Americans who do not believe taxpayers should be forced to fund abortions — especially when those services are extended to illegal immigrants.
Governor Newsom’s outrage is telling. It’s not about cancer screenings or birth control access. It’s about losing federal cash for the state’s most sacred cow: Planned Parenthood. And make no mistake — this isn’t just about California. It’s part of a broader push by the Trump administration to hold the line against progressive abuse of federal programs.
If Planned Parenthood wants to keep operating as a political arm of the left, they’re free to do it — just not on the taxpayer’s dime.
And in that sense, this isn’t “just plain cruel.” It’s just plain accountability.
