Tech billionaire Elon Musk quietly donated $15 million to Republican and pro-Trump groups, even while publicly criticizing President Trump and distancing himself from GOP politics, according to newly released campaign finance records.
Musk’s behind-the-scenes support came despite his public split from the former president in July. Before the falling-out, Musk led Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, championing his America First agenda. But after a highly public disagreement, Musk appeared to withdraw entirely from politics, even suggesting the need for a third party due to frustrations with Trump and the Republican Congress.
Despite Musk publicly stating in May that he had “done enough” politically after contributing $288 million to Republicans during the 2024 election, the billionaire quietly sent millions more. Just one month later, Musk donated $5 million directly to MAGA Inc., a powerful super PAC supporting Trump’s agenda, and another $10 million to groups fighting to secure or regain Republican control of Congress.
These contributions came at the very same time Musk was openly criticizing Trump’s landmark “One Big Beautiful Bill,” saying it didn’t sufficiently address deficit reduction. Musk’s public threats of forming a new political party left observers assuming he had abandoned the GOP altogether.
The disclosures have stunned many conservatives who considered Musk’s relationship with Trump permanently fractured. The sizable donations suggest Musk’s public feud with Trump could be more complex—or even strategic.
Musk, recently awarded a historic $26 billion pay package from Tesla, made these contributions seem small by comparison—equivalent to about $5.47 for an average American with a median net worth. Still, his donations are significant politically, fueling speculation about his true intentions within the Republican Party.
Musk’s mixed signals have some conservatives questioning if his feud with Trump is genuine, or simply a calculated move to assert influence within GOP circles. Others believe the billionaire’s quiet donations may signal a strategic hedge, maintaining connections while publicly voicing displeasure to influence policy direction.
Regardless of his motivations, Musk’s quiet financial backing underscores a clear message: despite public disagreements, his political influence within conservative circles remains potent and active. This revelation could reshape perceptions of Musk’s relationship with Trump and Republican leaders, hinting that the tech mogul remains deeply committed to a conservative political future.
Conservatives nationwide will be closely watching Musk’s next moves, trying to discern whether these contributions mark a reconciliation, a strategic maneuver, or the start of a new political chapter altogether.
