Around 8:45 am on January 13th, the Homestead, FL PD had their normally quiet morning disturbed. Flagged down by a man near Southwest Fourth Street and Krome Avenue, officers were told that he had been stabbed by a black male wearing a blue durag, orange pants, and a white shirt. Putting out a notice to look out for the suspect, other officers quickly found a man matching the description on Southwest Fourth Street and South Flagler Avenue.
Identified as Devon Cooper of Homestead, the man had a cut on his hand, was wearing blood-soaked clothing, and also had a knife in his possession. Detailed for questioning, Cooper refused to cooperate with the investigation. His victim, however, was able to recall the tale.
Interviewed at the hospital, the victim told investigators that he was sleeping in the third-floor stairwell of a parking garage when Cooper woke him and asked if anyone else was there. With a “no” response, the victim claims he turned over and tried going back to sleep. However, Cooper refused to leave and instead pulled the jacket down from the victim’s face as he stood over his prey and stared at him.
According to the victim, this was when he noticed Cooper was now pleasuring himself while staring at him. Suddenly awake, he claims Cooper took up a boxing stance before rushing him and stabbing him multiple times across his body. Adding insult to injury, Cooper grabbed one of the man’s bags and threw it over the rail. Trying for a second, the victim beat him before it could be taken away. Cooper fled the scene but was later picked out of a photo lineup by the victim.
Cooper now faces charges of attempted murder, armed robbery, and indecent exposure.
