House Democrats Demand Power to Block Veterans from Buying Guns

Last week, the US Senate righted a grievous wrong against American military veterans. An amendment to the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act abolished a Clinton-era rule that allowed unelected bureaucrats at the VA to declare vets as “mentally incompetent.” Whenever that happened, vets’ names were added to the FBI’s instant background check database so they could not purchase firearms. Naturally, House Democrats want to reinstate that policy immediately.

Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) successfully added the amendment to the appropriations bill, so that veterans’ gun rights will be restored once it’s passed into law.

Kennedy said in a statement after its passage, “Unelected bureaucrats shouldn’t be able to strip veterans of their Second Amendment rights unilaterally. The Senate did the right thing for veterans and all freedom-loving Americans by passing my amendment today.”

Democrats are enraged at the idea of Second Amendment rights applying to America’s veterans. More than 140 House Democrats wrote a letter to the VA in response to Kennedy’s successful overturning of the gun ban.

The Democrats are demanding that the VA adjust the current rules that it’s operating under, and instead begin using state-level gun confiscation laws to disarm veterans. Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) is spearheading the efforts to continue disarming veterans.

Thompson claimed in a letter that Democrats sent to the VA that they are trying to “prevent suicides” among veterans. But everyone knows this is a lie. It has nothing to do with protecting vets. It has everything to do with disarming the very same people who swore an oath to uphold the Constitution as the Democrats try to abolish it.

Democrats know they can’t defeat the legislation in the House, so they are now trying to find another end-run around the Second Amendment.
