Groceries are expensive. And when we have to throw groceries out because they expire before we can use them, it becomes even more of a financial hit.

Well, in the desperate times that many of us are living in, more and more companies and organizations are releasing lists of foods that we can eat even AFTER they have expired.

Even the USDA is in on this. Apparently, expiration dates don’t mean what they used to mean.

Here are a few foods you can eat without any problem past the expiration date:
– Breakfast cereal
– Sour cream
– Frozen foods
– Corn on the cob
– Canned foods

There are a few other foods that you can eat, too. Just be ready to perform a visual inspection or give them a good whiff before you dive in. Such foods include:
– Bread
– Milk
– Cheese
– Berries

Even eggs can be consumed past the expiration date that is marked on the carton. For these, however, there’s a bit more of a test involved. You place the egg in a glass of water. If it sinks, it’s fine to consume. If it stands up, it’s close to expiring. And if it floats to the top, you should definitely throw the egg out.

These tips may actually help you to get the most out of your last grocery shopping trip. However, considering lists like this are becoming more and more common to see, it shows that desperate times really do call for desperate measures.
